Houston Grand Opera made history in 1996 when it premiered Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas (Florencia in the Amazon), the first Spanish-language opera commissioned by a major opera house in the United States. That opera, rich with the interplay of passengers on a steamboat in the Amazon in the early Twentieth Century, and tinged with magical realism, returns to HGO stage on Friday, conducted by Patrick Summers and directed by Francesca Zambello. Soprano Ana Maria Martínez will take the title role.

Performances begin 7:30 pm Friday and continue through Feb. 3. houstongrandopera.org; 713-228-6737.
