It’s been called the greatest Broadway musical of all time, and even opera purists have to admit that the quality of the music, the intensity of the drama, and the bold approach to urban conflict make Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story a landmark of American culture.

Houston Grand Opera puts its stamp on this masterpiece of the lyric stage in upcoming weeks with a production directed by Francesca Zambello and conducted by Timothy Myers; Andrea Carroll and Norman Reinhardt star as Maria and Tony, the modern-day Romeo and Juliet caught in gang warfare.

The production opens 7:30 p.m. Friday at George R. Brown Convention Center, with repeat performances through May 6. houstongrandopera.org; 713-228-6737
