Expect heavy-duty high tech effects and a rare hybrid of cinema, opera, theater, and murder mystery when Dallas Opera presents the American premiere of Dutch composer Michael van der Aa’s The Sunken Garden.

With a libretto by David Mitchell (author of the novel that inspired the 2012 sci-fi epic Cloud Atlas), the work received international attention at its debut in London in 2013. Nicole Paiement will conduct, with the principal roles performed by baritone Roderick Williams, soprano Miah Persson, and soprano Katherine Manley in a production directed by the composer.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday and March 14 and 17, and 2 p.m. Sunday at Winspear Opera House. dallasopera.org.
