Herbert Howells. Painting by Leonard Boden, 1974.

The 20th-century British composer Herbert Howells wrote his radiant Hymnus Paradisi for chorus and orchestra in response to the death of his 9-year-old son in 1935, drawing on Biblical and liturgical texts of consolation.

The Dallas Choral Festival, a 100-voice professional chorus organized in 2016 to perform large-scale sacred choral works, will present this rarely performed masterpiece Sunday, accompanied by an orchestra under conductor Greg Hobbs.

The concert, which will also feature Poulenc’s Stabat Mater, will be presented at 3 p.m. at Moody Performance Hall in Dallas. dallaschoralfestival.com; 214-871-5000.
