Nowhere does Beethoven so completely embody the revolutionary spirit of his age than in his only opera Fidelio, in which he imbues a tale of disguise, intrigue, rescue, and resistance with the grandeur of his symphonic music.

The Houston Symphony crosses into the world of opera with a semi-stage version of the work this weekend; Andrés Orozco-Estrada conducts, joined by a cast including soprano Rebecca von Lipinski and tenor Russell Thomas.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Jones Hall. houstonsymphony.org; 713-224-7575.
